Heading in to Howling Hops in Hackney Wick, you get a real ‘warehouse’ vibe. It’s very cool. You’re instantly hit with that distinctive hop aroma (delicious) backed up by the striking sight of 10 huge tanks. These guys built the first ever Tank Bar where you can pour straight from them – very impressive to look at and great fun to experience.
Founder Peter Holt works hard, busily keeping the brewery and Tank Bar going. He’s supported by a great team who really know their stuff. From brewing hoppy, exciting beers, to the great service at the bar, these are the breweries that we love supporting the most.
Where did it all begin?
Peter started out by selling small-batch beers from his brewer friends across the bar at the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town in 2008 (which he still runs now). There was a great demand for these beers with punters wanting to try something new and interesting. This led him to wanting to brew the beers himself. That’s when they discovered some space that could work for them – a basement at The Cock Tavern in Hackney. They’d brew downstairs and sell upstairs in the bar, and the locals loved it!
They were brewing up to eight different beers at a time and estimate that they brewed over 100 different beers at The Cock Tavern. No mean feat when you’re brewing in a low-ceiling basement! By luck, they were offered warehouse space which was a no-brainer. Not just for the extra room, but to brew even more beer for the locals who demanded it.
That was nearly 10 years ago and a lot has happened since then.
They’re built a brand to be proud of. The geometric can designs are as eye-catching and inviting as their brewery. They’re keen to keep to the original philosophy of keeping brewing fun. Brewing what they want to brew and being experimental and innovative. Something that becomes a little trickier the bigger you get, but they’re aware of this and really focussed on brewing small-batch beers that people will talk about. You can see that for yourself on Untappd with an ever-growing following and high ratings.
They have a core range of four beers and the rest are seasonal or single-batch, keeping the locals in the North and East London pubs happy. Their beers are hoppy and flavoursome. They don’t want to be brewing the big-batch boring beers you find in the supermarkets. Much more focussed on flavour and fun with their own tastes in mind. We figure, if an awesome brewer loves the beer then we probably will too … and we do!
Their Tank Bar reopened on 4th July and is open every day! Slightly different from before of course, with a new one-way system, but you still get the same buzz and the support from the locals has been great. If you find yourself in London, we highly recommend a visit. You can enjoy a delicious beer from their tanks and enjoy some Columbian cuisine from Maize Blaze – an amazing pairing with these beers.
We think you'll love their beers and, if you're on a monthly subscription, you'll find at least one beer from them in your September case. Give them a try and let us know what you think. Not on a subscription yet? Check out our latest cases
Cheers to great beers!
